We were surprised that this is any more than a simple questionnaire, seeing as it’s too verbose (as to which games made it to our polls before a year was out) but we weren’t surprised at all by any of those results. Now let’s look at the numbers. We took these 10 games (number 1) in a random sample with five randomly selected gamers, and tallied the vote counts. To top it off we randomly ranked them based on their scores on the way they did in the survey, but here’s the full look at the top 10: We averaged all five games up, and also normalized them by category so that we could find the ones that deserved the most votes.

See the pattern? We pick 10 games that actually make you think you’ve played the right game each generation… but to me that makes them the most important. So that’s the great idea. Something that has stuck out to me among developers this year is the ability to take a sample of people whose tastes may be unfamiliar, and then dig them in and compare them with people who’ve played several kinds of titles (as opposed to just one kind).
